On 1 January most people have a clear picture of the year they want. By February, most of those goals are gone. Not dropped in one moment, just quietly pushed aside.
January runs on motivation
At the start of the year you have energy, a clean calendar and a fresh sense of what matters. Setting a goal feels easy.
Then work starts again. The inbox fills and the meetings come back. The urgent returns, and the goal you set on holiday has no place in a normal week.
February runs on whatever system you have
Motivation was never meant to carry a goal for twelve months. It gets you started. Something else has to keep you going.
That something is a system: a fixed time in the week when the goal gets attention, a way to check whether it moved, and people who notice when you go quiet. Without one, the urgent decides your week by default.
Three mistakes that end most resolutions
- 1
Too many goals. Five resolutions compete with each other and with your job. None of them gets enough attention.
- 2
No weekly step. "Get fit" or "grow the business" can't be acted on this Tuesday. A goal you can't act on this week is easy to postpone forever.
- 3
No plan for bad weeks. Everyone has them. If one missed week means the goal is broken, February ends it.
What to do this December
- 1
Pick one goal. The one that would matter most if it were done by this time next year.
- 2
Give it a weekly slot. Put one fixed time in your calendar now, before January fills it. Treat it like a meeting you can't move.
- 3
Get a weekly check-in. With a coach, a peer or a small group. Someone who will ask what you did and what's next.
Then each week, choose one concrete step that moves the goal forward. On Friday, check whether it happened.
Plan for falling off
You will miss weeks. Decide now what you'll do when that happens: start again from this week, with one small step, without catching up first. Here's how to get back on track with your goals.
Why Harvest runs for a year
Harvest runs for 52 weeks because a goal that matters takes longer than a burst of January energy. One live hour a week, inside your working day, with a coach and a small group.
